What Is a CIMT Test — and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

Sonographer performing a carotid ultrasound screening

You’ve probably heard your doctor mention cholesterol, blood pressure, maybe even a calcium score. But there’s a test gaining serious traction in preventive health circles that most people still haven’t heard of.

It’s called a CIMT test — and it might be the most important 15 minutes you spend on your health this year.

CIMT in Plain English

CIMT stands for Carotid Intima-Media Thickness. That sounds technical, but here’s what it actually means:

A sonographer places an ultrasound probe on your neck and measures the thickness of the inner lining of your carotid arteries — the two major blood vessels that carry blood from your heart to your brain.

If that lining is thicker than it should be, it’s an early sign that plaque is building up. And plaque buildup in your carotid arteries is the #1 cause of stroke.

The test takes about 15 minutes. No needles. No radiation. No fasting. You just lie there.

Cardiologists and longevity-focused physicians have been recommending CIMT as a baseline screening for years. Here’s why it’s catching on with the general public:

Blood work only tells part of the story. Your cholesterol panel shows what’s floating around in your blood. But it doesn’t show you what’s actually happening inside your artery walls. Two people with the same cholesterol numbers can have completely different levels of plaque buildup. CIMT shows the difference.

It catches problems before symptoms appear. By the time you feel something wrong with your arteries, it’s usually a medical emergency. CIMT can detect thickening and early plaque at a stage where lifestyle changes and medication can actually make a difference.

It gives you a baseline. If you get a CIMT at 45 or 50, you have a reference point. If you get another one in a few years, you can see whether things are getting better, staying stable, or getting worse. That kind of data is powerful.

Who Should Get a CIMT Test?

You don’t need symptoms to benefit from this screening. It’s especially valuable if you’re:

  • Over 40 (50+ especially)
  • Living with high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Diabetic or pre-diabetic
  • A smoker or former smoker
  • Carrying a family history of stroke or heart disease
  • Someone who just wants to know where they stand

What Happens During the Test

You lie down on an exam table. The sonographer applies gel to your neck and uses an ultrasound probe to capture images of both carotid arteries. You’ll see the images in real time on the screen next to you.

The sonographer measures the intima-media thickness and checks for any visible plaque. The images are then reviewed by a board-certified radiologist, and you’ll receive your results within one business day.

That’s it. You’re in and out.
